Fees

Stated up front, so you can decide whether this is right for you before you get in touch.

What counselling costs

Two figures, and no surprises after them.

Initial assessment£3545 minutes

A first conversation about what is bringing you here. Usually with our lead therapist. There is no obligation to continue afterwards.

Ongoing sessions£60–£8050 minutes

Usually weekly, at a consistent time reserved for you. The rate depends on the practitioner and the session format.

No registration fee. No minimum number of sessions. No tie-in.

Paying for sessions

Sessions are paid for in advance. We send an invoice, and you can pay by bank transfer (BACS) or card. Card payments are handled securely by Stripe. Your card details never reach the practice.

Your therapy agreement

Before your first ongoing session, you and your therapist agree written terms covering confidentiality and its limits, cancellations, and how we work together. It sets out what you can expect from us, and it does not tie you to a number of sessions.

Cancelling or rearranging

We ask for at least 48 hours' notice. Your appointment time is held for you each week rather than offered to someone else, so a session cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice is charged at the full rate.

What you are paying for

An hour that belongs to you, with a qualified practitioner who is registered, insured and supervised.

Your session time is held for you each week, whether or not you are able to use it. That is what makes it possible to build the kind of consistent relationship the work depends on.

  • A BACP-registered practitioner, in regular clinical supervision
  • A private room in central Canterbury, or a secure online session
  • The same time each week, reserved for you
  • Full professional indemnity insurance
  • No charge for the time we spend preparing or reviewing between sessions

If private therapy is out of reach

Private counselling is not affordable for everyone, and it should not be the only way to get help.

NHS talking therapies

Free. Your GP can refer you, and in most areas you can also refer yourself directly. There is often a waiting list.

Charities and low-cost services

Organisations including Mind and Rethink offer free or reduced-cost counselling, and some train counsellors who see clients at lower rates.

If you need help now

None of the above is right for a crisis. See urgent help for support available today, free, at any hour.

Questions about fees

What it costs, what is included, and what happens if it is not affordable.

How much does counselling cost at The Pickle Jar Therapy Practice?
Your initial 45-minute assessment is £35. Ongoing one-to-one sessions are £60 to £80 for 50 minutes, depending on the practitioner and session format. There are no registration fees and no minimum number of sessions. Before you start, you and your therapist agree written terms covering confidentiality, cancellations and how we work together.
Why is the first session cheaper than the ongoing ones?
The initial assessment is a shorter, different conversation. It exists so you can find out whether therapy here is right for you before committing to anything, and so we can consider which practitioner may suit you. It is priced so cost is not the reason someone never starts.
Do I have to commit to a set number of sessions?
No. Sessions are usually weekly at a consistent time that is held for you, but you decide how long you continue. There is no minimum block to buy and no obligation to continue after your initial assessment. You can end therapy whenever you choose.
How and when do I pay for my therapy sessions?
Sessions are paid for in advance. We send you an invoice, and you can pay by bank transfer (BACS) or card. Card payments are handled securely by Stripe, so your card details never reach the practice. Receipts are available on request for insurance or employer claims.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for at least 48 hours' notice to cancel or rearrange a session. Your appointment time is held for you each week rather than offered to someone else, so a session cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice is charged at the full session rate.
What if I cannot afford private counselling?
Please do not let cost stop you getting support. Your GP can refer you to NHS talking therapies free of charge, and you can self-refer directly in most areas. Charities including Mind and Rethink also offer low-cost or free counselling. We would rather you got help elsewhere than none.

Knowing the cost is part of deciding

If the figures work for you, the next step is a conversation rather than a commitment.
